ABOUT THE LA CAFE AND COFFEE HOUSE

The Vision
I was in the car on my way home from the bookstore, listening to the CD I had just purchased, when I wished that a place existed in Lehigh Acres where people could hear the positive messages I was hearing – A place to gather and listen, talk and laugh, learn and eat. I thought that many communities have that place in their local coffee shop, and so I wished for a coffee shop. Be careful what you wish for! Within the next few minutes as that vision was forming in my head, I realized that it was actually a plan and since it was in my head, well I surmised that it was my call to put that plan in motion. That was in March of 2005 and though it took over two years to execute, it’s been a thrill to see it come into being.

The Concept
Pastor Doug at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church begins the service every Sunday morning by greeting the congregation with “Welcome to Paradise!” What a great weekly reminder to count our blessings that we live here in beautiful Southwest Florida, with an abundance of sunshine and warm winter months. Yeh, as I write this in August, it’s hotter than heck, but the almost certain promise of an afternoon rain shower and amazing lightning show provides a sense of anticipation that lessens the weight of the heat.

For several years I commuted to Fort Myers to work and I know Lehigh Acres is home to many who spend long days at work and on the road (I know that because of the traffic that starts at 6:00 am) and it’s easy to get caught up in the daily routine of driving, working, chores, and taking care of our yards, and sometimes Lehigh is just the place that we call home.

But then I head out on my bicycle and an eagle drops down on the road just a few feet ahead of me and plucks its prey from the shoulder or I stop to gaze from a bridge over the Able Canal and am surprised to see three otter faces looking back up at me from the water. Lizards stand on their hind legs and run across my driveway as if they are miniature dinosaurs and gopher turtles chomp on the sand spurs in my yard like the medieval bards and lasses eat turkey legs. Though we might not be able to glimpse the green flash from our vantage point, the most beautiful sunset cloud displays that I have photographed have been from my own backyard. And for one week every Spring I can actually walk to the park and buy a caramel apple – and I think, we have it all! Welcome to paradise.

And so the logo reflects familiar images of the part of the country we call home. I hope that The L.A. Café and Coffee House can provide a place that feels like a home away from home where we can meet and take a break with our neighbors. Enjoy.
